Wow! So where do I begin?
This book was a great read. I was hooked within the first few pages and had it half done in only two nights of reading because I stayed up until 3am reading. It's a dark romance with very intense survival trials that span the full 452 page length of the book. How those trials ended left me shocked to say the least.
Apparently this is book one of a duet but isn't the only duet within the series. The third book I am assuming (because it hasn't been released yet) is a first of a second duet. I guess we shall see.
In the Serpent and the Wings of Night book, Oraya is a human raised in a world of vampires and enlists in the Kejari Trials in order to gain the respect and power needed to survive in a world intent on killing her. When she has to make an alliance to succeed in the trials, despite being trained her entire life to trust no one, especially a vampire, she makes a choice that might have her fighting more than the battles within the trial.
There are trigger warnings at the beginning of this book and it is quite violent in and out of the trials. It has blood thirsty enemies and a slow burn romance that has you turning every page with need!
The Insider compares this book to A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas but I didn't feel that comparison at all with the exception of Feyre's singular trials under the mountain.
No, this book indeed stands out on its own and is incredible for it. The only comparison I'd make to the SJM series was the compelling need to read it all. I devoured it and tonight I will return to my wanton reading with book two, The Ashes and the Star Cursed King.
