Wow, what a surprise this book was for me. It snagged me so fast and kept me clung to it until it was over and made me start book 2 before the cover had cooled from being held in my hands. I loved this book and the dark mystery of the characters. Everyone baring secrets and lies meant for survival. It has no comparison to any book that I have yet read but Publisher's Weekly notes that “fans of Sarah J Maas, Naomi Novik and Hannah Witten will want to check this out”. To me the book stands gloriously on its own.
The relationship between Elspeth and the Nightmare is gripping and fun, witty and strange all at the same time. I felt throughout the book that it was one of the most unique character relationships that I've ever read.
As for the ever present smut that fantasy romance is known for, there is little as the enemies to lovers trope is only just warming up by the end of book one. That being said, the kindling on the relationship between Elspeth and her MMC makes you wishful and anticipatory for more steamy moments!
Oh and when it comes to villains, as all good books have them, this book doesn't disappoint. I loved that there was more than one villain and so many characters to hate.
Honestly, within the covers of this book I found so much to enjoy and felt like I was pulled into a dark fantasy with writing as eloquent as Adalyn Grace's, Belladonna. So much mystery, magic, danger and whimsiness that I didn't want it to end.
